Whacking the bear with a shovel didn’t quite scare it off-the bear turned its attention to Ayotte, who would have been killed had other neighbors not stepped in and scared it off with a few gunshots and a truck-but the action won Ayotte a medal for bravery and a spot in Manitoban lore. “The bear had the woman by the head and was wagging her around in the air, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, so I was thinking I’ve got to do something.” So, Ayotte grabbed a shovel, ran up to the bear, and hit it square in the eye. ![]() “I went to my front door and opened the door and I looked outside and about 40 feet away was a bear mauling a woman,” he told the Winnipeg News Station CTV. In 2013, a 71-year-old man named William Ayotte was sitting in his living room in Manitoba, Canada watching television when he heard a scream come from the direction of his neighbor’s house. ![]()
